Metal?

How come, I thought everything was built out of wood in the US...

This ain’t single family residential, so no. Nothing I’ve drawn has been wood framed.

If that happens, it’d only be because of a direct tornado strike.

I’m not in architecture but it’s always cool to see developments I’ve worked on actually built.

Have you guys looked into doing any heavy timber mid/high rises up there? We’ve kinda talked about it, but cost wise it doesn’t meet our clients needs yet.

I’ve heard of it but no one up here is talking about it. I’m guessing some is cost and some is people just sticking with what they are familiar with.

Well, here in Mexico we despise wood so much that some buildings are made out of concrete that is poured into a mold so that it’s made to look like... wood.

It’s actually quite pretty, some go as far as to treat the walls of the mold with some chemicals to achieve a light cooper hue... it’s quite pretty

Here some are starting to look at wood for some parts of small structures, but nothing yet. As for steel though... as realtors want to ride the bubble they stopped building out of rebar and concrete and instead make whole structures with steel; it’s significantly faster but also very expensive as few construction crews are used to working with steel and not with concrete

Board formed concrete is a rather pretty material. We build mostly with steel, CMU, and precast concrete.

I’ve seen some use precast but as far as I can tell it’s still an oddity. we sometimes use CMUs for wall fittings within the concrete structures, but we go for brick mostly. Generally we see a lot of cinder blocks being used (and left untreated) in some poorer, undeveloped areas with irregular constructions. Regularly (unless you’re willing to give a hefty bribe to careless regulators) you’ll be expected to build with concrete or steel. Even then you can build without much problem as long as you have a DRO (Director Responsible for Construction) who will generally be a structural engineer or civil engineer. As for individual homes, mostly brick and a steel/concrete mix. Outside Mexico City however, wood is more commonly used.
